The Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio recognizes and understands the tremendous anxiety, uncertainty, and stress placed on families and friends of those individuals facing a term of incarceration in a federal correctional facility.

Hopefully, the links to the left will be helpful in answering many of the common questions regarding the incarceration policies of the United States Bureau of Prisons.

Families and friends are encouraged to begin by accessing the Bureau of Prisons “Inmate Locator” web page. Once the individual has been located, write down his/her “registration number.” This number is important because it is the number that the Bureau of Prisons uses to identify the inmate.

Once the inmate’s holding facility has been identified, follow the links to access that facility’s practices regarding: (1) telephone policies; (2) mailing address; (3) sending money to the individual; (4) visitation policies; and (5) area airports and driving directions.
